We had a great turnout on Saturday for the opening to the 2011 season and the unveiling of the Hylonomus lyelli exhibit. The presentation began with speeches from Larry Latta (Vice-Chair for the Joggins Fossil Institute's Board of Directors) and Jenna Boon (Director of the Joggins Fossil Institute) about how exciting it is to have Hylonomus home again in Joggins after 152 years. Next, world-renowned vertebrate palaeontologist Dr. Jenny Clack from Cambridge University gave a very interesting presentation about the significance of the Hylonomus fossil and how it, the earliest known reptile, fits into the evolutionary tree. Dr. Clack also touched on other important Joggins discoveries including more tetrapod remains belonging to amphibians which were mostly found in fossilized trees, as was Hylonomus.
Thanks to all who attended.
Hylonomus lyelli will be on display for the remainder of the 2011 season (until October 31st) at the Joggins Fossil Centre.
